1. What does sustainability mean to you?

At Walsh, sustainability means building responsibly for the long term. It is about using time, materials, energy, and space thoughtfully while creating buildings that are healthy, durable, efficient and resilient.

We also believe sustainability has to work in the real world. The best solution is one that delivers measurable environmental benefits while also supporting the owner’s budget, the people who will occupy the building and the community around it. That means looking beyond individual products or certifications and considering the building’s entire lifecycle which includes energy and water use, embodied carbon, material health, durability, operating costs and ultimately how well the building serves people.

2. Name a Portland (or Oregon) project or collaboration that has inspired you, and tell us why.

Julia West House in downtown Portland is particularly inspiring to us because it demonstrates that sustainability, innovation, and affordability can work together to address some of our communities' most pressing needs.

Walsh recently completed this 12-story, 56,000-square-foot permanent supportive housing project in partnership with Community Development Partners, Holst Architecture, and a talented team of engineers and trade partners. Situated on a site of only about 5,000 square feet, which is roughly one-eighth of a typical Portland block or a SE Portland residential home lot, the project delivers 90 affordable homes while making efficient use of valuable urban land. This tiny site with high rise zoning was a good use case for mass timber because site logistics made other structural systems particularly challenging.

What makes the project especially meaningful is the way the team approached innovation. Early analysis compared five structural systems before determining that mass timber with a steel buckling restrained brace (BRB) lateral system offered the best combination of cost and schedule while also supporting the project's sustainability and carbon goals. Prefabricated timber components helped accelerate installation and reduce disruption on the constrained urban site, while exposed wood brings warmth and biophilic qualities into residents' homes.

For us, Julia West House represents the future of sustainable construction: innovative, cost-conscious, replicable, and focused on delivering meaningful community impact. It demonstrates that low-carbon, high-performance building strategies can be applied to affordable housing and scaled to benefit more communities across Oregon.

3. Tell us more about your event at this year’s SBW!

Portland and Oregon have been leaders in sustainable design and construction for decades. Looking ahead, one of our biggest opportunities is making high-performance, low-carbon construction easier to deliver at scale, particularly for affordable housing and other mission-driven projects.

That starts with greater collaboration early in the process. Decisions about structural systems, building envelopes, mechanical systems, embodied carbon, and long-term performance are most effective when owners, designers, contractors, manufacturers, and trade partners are working together from the outset. When sustainability, constructability, and cost are evaluated in tandem, project teams are better positioned to maximize both environmental and community benefits.

We also need to continue closing the gap between what is technically possible and what is financially feasible. Incentives and programs that support energy efficiency, low-carbon materials, and innovative building technologies can help move successful ideas from pilot projects into everyday practice. Julia West House is a great example, where approximately $1.8 million in Portland Clean Energy Fund support helped advance a project that combines permanent supportive housing with ambitious sustainability goals.

Portland and Oregon already possess world-class expertise in sustainable building. The next step is accelerating the adoption of successful innovations, sharing lessons learned across the industry, and developing the workforce and supply chains needed to support the next generation of high-performance buildings. Sustainability becomes truly transformative when it stops being a specialized approach and simply becomes how we build.
